MT.
Calvary Star Baptist Church Fire
RHEMA’s Publisher had the following interview
with the Pastor of Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church, Rev. Alex Young.
As the RHEMA’s Publisher said to Pastor Young, the goal of the
article is to share with those who still are not aware of the tragedy
and to continue to keep the need of Mt. Calvary Star at the forefront
of the Body of Christ. RHEMA: Pastor Young,
when did the fire occur?
Pastor Young: On February 18th
RHEMA: What was the cause of the fire?
Pastor Young: It was caused by an electrical line from the pole
during the ice and snow.
RHEMA: Was it a total loss?
Pastor Young: Yes, it was a total loss. When the fireman had finished
putting out the fire, they ask if they could use the hose to knock
down some things – for safety reasons. The demolition was
done during the week of February 21st.
RHEMA: Was the church insured?
Pastor Young: The church is insured but it is not enough to cover
the loss.
RHEMA : Are there any benefits or fundraisers planned?
Pastor Young: Fundraisers are in the planning stages now.
RHEMA: I understand the church is meeting at the old Israel Baptist
Church?
Pastor Young: Yes, we are meeting at the old Israel Baptist Church
at the corner of Preston and Chester Streets.
RHEMA: What has been the response to the fire….have there
been support?
Pastor Young: Ministers from around the city have called...someone
has donated a piano. Many have promised to help.
RHEMA: How is the congregation doing since the fire?
Pastor Young: The turnout for the first Sunday was very good. The
congregation was charged and ready to rebuild.
RHEMA: Pastor Young, can you share your reflections at the stage
of recovery?
Pastor Young: Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church is still on the move
for Christ. It is not as it was before but it is still fine. We
believe God is going to bless us to rebuild. We are still worshipping
and giving God praise.
RHEMA: Can you name some specific needs of the church? If you had
a wish list..what would be on it?
Pastor Young: The greatest needs is funds. The church need everything.
We do not have an organ, chairs…everything was lost. We are
totally rebuilding.
RHEMA: Where can the readers send the fund? What is the contact
information?
Pastor Young: Mt. Calvary Star Baptist Church, P. O. Box 4119, Baltimore,
MD 21205. I can be reached at 410-238-4788 or 410-276-1431.
RHEMA: As we end, are there any persons you want to thank?
Pastor Young: The Mayor and her cabinet. They came to the scene
of the fire. Elijah Cummings called to give his support. So many
Pastors of all race and faith called – too many to recall
on this short notice – but I want to thank them.
